AWARDS

Sovereign Bodies Institute is committed to uplifting Indigenous scholars at all stages of their journey as data gatherers and knowledge keepers, particularly women and two spirit leaders. We provide support to women and two spirit undergraduate and graduate students who show promise in their careers as leaders to end MMIP and gender and sexual violence against Indigenous people, by offering awards each Fall and Spring Semester.

Awards we offer include:

Emerging Leader Awards

Outstanding Scholar Awards

Judge Claudette White Memorial Student Award

ELIGIBILITY:

  • Enrolled at an accredited college or university in Canada or the US

  • Identify as an Indigenous person, belonging to a specific Indigenous people

  • For Emerging Leader and Outstanding Scholar Student Awards:

    • Pursuing a future working to end gender and sexual violence against Indigenous people

  • For Judge Claudette White Memorial Student Award

    • Pursuing a law degree or a college degree with the goal of a career in Indian child welfare or tribal justice.

APPLICATION MATERIALS:

  • Proof of academic enrollment

  • Professional/academic letter of recommendation

  • Letter of recommendation from an elder or leader from your community

  • Short answer (500 words) telling us which people or nation you belong to, and your relationship to them

  • For Emerging Leader and Outstanding Scholar Student Awards:

    • Essay (1000 words) telling us about how you plan to use your studies to address the issue of MMIP or gender & sexual violence

  • For Judge Claudette White Memorial Student Award

    • Essay (1000 words) telling us about how you plan to use your studies to address Indian child welfare or tribal justice
