The Outstanding Scholar Award is given to applicants who we feel are utilizing their studies in promising ways, and show innovative and creative ideas for how they plan to build on their studies to bring healing and safety to our communities.

Nakia Chávez (23) is Diné & Chicana, and resides on Akimel O'odham and Hohokam territory. Nakia became an Indigenous Activist and water protector when she was in high school. She's also had her own experiences with MMIP, sexual assault, depression, and ongoing health issues that impact Native Americans in the US. She has goals to find a career path that serves and protects her community now and in the far future. She is currently attending school for her passion, Native American Studies. Nakia joined SBI as a Research Intern in fall 2022.
